A library in Enfield has been commended for its efforts to teach primary schoolchildren about the life of footballer and world war one officer Walter Tull.

Edmonton Green Library staff worked with Tottenham Hotspur football club and education group Big Ideas, to host class visits in March for more than 100 pupils centring on Tull’s life.

He was the first black man to become an officer in the British Army, and one of England’s first black footballers playing for Spurs between 1909 and 1911.

The library, run by Enfield Council, received a certificate of commendation awarded by Big Ideas and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Big Ideas offers help on running community and education projects providing materials for class visits.

The pupils were given access to books and materials about Walter Tull, as well as the importance of black British history in the early twentieth century.
